Resurgam presents the greatest musical drama of all time, Bach’s St Matthew Passion, in Holy Week performances in Cavan, Kilkenny and Galway. At last this most famous of all choral masterpieces will be heard in Ireland in a manner as close as possible to that of Bach’s day.  The version used will be that used by Bach himself in the 1740s. The vocal forces are modelled on those available to Bach, and the soloists will be drawn from each of the two choirs. The players of the Irish Baroque Orchestra will be performing on period instruments. Irish audiences will hear for the first time the vivid colours and textures familiar to the vast crowds that packed the Leipzig churches in Bach’s own time every Good Friday to hear this work.

Song of Farewell: A Western Sojourn

Dear Friends & Supporters,

We are just back from our latest Resurgam tour, a rich mix of Nunc Dimittis settings together with complementary
offerings by Parry, Tippett, and Bingham, performed in various venues in the west and southwest of Ireland. My
head is filled with the music we have enjoyed over the last week as well as some wonderful memories of places and
people. Touring a programme is a special challenge – one has to keep the music as fresh as possible whilst dealing
with the challenges of long journeys on sometimes difficult roads, new accommodations every night, and the
alimentary lottery of foraging in a new place at every mealtime. It is a credit to our singers that by the end of tour
they seemed as enthusiastic about the music we were singing as they were at the outset. My thanks to all who took
part, and to Gavin for expertly managing the tour with his usual savoir-faire.

Each venue added something unique and special to the programme. Many of Ireland’s ancient western cathedrals
are relatively unknown, and some of our crew discovered for the first time the special charms of buildings such as
Rosscarbery standing above its little estuary or Kilfenora nestling up in the middle of the Burren. In Newport, we
found what must be one of the best examples of Celtic-revival architecture in the country, the imposing St Patrick’s
Church complete with sumptuous acoustic and superb glass from the Harry Clarke studio. In Tuam Cathedral we
were delighted to discover a fine stained glass window depicting the Nunc Dimittis scene, complete with Simeon,
Anna and the basket with the two turtle doves. Perhaps the most memorable evening was in Kilfenora: here, after
taking in the superb high cross and stonework of the ruinous choir and transept, to step into the little nave with its
plain interior complete with fireplaces, box pews and double-decker pulpit was to enter another time-zone
completely, and the turf fire and candlelight created a wonderful ambience (although at one stage the turf smoke
got the better of one of our sopranos!). Smoky cathedrals require post-concert tracheal lubrication, and we enjoyed
the hospitality of some great hostelries, such as Vaughan’s in Kilfenora and Eugene’s in Ennistimon.

Tours such as this I find hugely enjoyable. A team of fine singers and a programme of wonderful music is of course
the starting point, but then there is a special magic when one finds a remarkable building providing fresh insight
and an enthusiastic audience of whatever size. To drive across the lunar vastness of a landscape such as the Burren
and sing amidst ancient stones for folk who may never have heard such music before is a rare privilege.

Here’s to the next one!

Mark Duley,

Artistic Director, Resurgam
